Burglary Prevention for Small Businesses

 In Burglary, Forced Entry

Typical business store front doors and windows are structurally different than that of a residential property. They also use different lock hardware and have very different security and access control needs.

Burglary to commercial properties often occurs through an intrusion through a forced door or window. There are a number of hardware solutions that can be installed to prevent theft and damage to your business. A Security Upgrade by a professional locksmith experienced in security and theft prevention may be needed for your business security.

A business property often has a glass door framed in aluminum. The frame around these doors is too narrow for a cylindrical door prep and they are prepped for locks specific to this situation: Narrow Stile Locks.

Commercial locks on businesses are often the targets of jimmying attempts to manipulate the bolt or spring latch or an attempt is made to spread the frame. The mortise cylinder, where the key enters the lock on the face of the door, is also vulnerable to removal for internal manipulation of the lock mechanism. Glass nearby is vulnerable to breaking and entering or to breaking and reaching in to unlock the lock by using the turn on the inside.

A common but overlooked burglary on commercial properties is burglary by breaking through walls of adjacent units. This often happens in a strip-mall where an adjacent unit has lower security than the business targeted by thieves. The thieves will break into the easier target and then through the drywall into the adjacent unit as the walls are usually hollow with steel studs only every 16 inches or so. Sometimes they go through several units in a row through the walls.

All of these methods of entry, jimmying and spreading, cylinder removal and glass breaking, and even through wall attacks, can be prevented by Narrow Stile Lock or Security Hardware improvements. Hook-bolts can interlock with the door frame, Astragals prevent jimmying and can be made to interlock with the frame as well, Cylinder guards prevent cylinder removal, Captive T-Turns and Double Sided locks make glass-breaking-to-unlock attempts ineffective and Window Bars prevent glass breaking and entering.
